IAN CARLETON
Hi, I’m Ian Carleton, a cinematographer and director from rural Canada.
PREMIERING
--- --- --- --- ---
I'm currently travelling with Aisha Evelyna's debut feature
Searhorse to its world premiere at SXSW 2026.
I served as the film's Director of Photography, working on a micro-budget to capture her powerful story set in sweaty summer in downtown Toronto.
IN PRODUCTION
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
I'm working as a Producer/DP with my dear friend Joel Ballanger on his short film Favourite. We're in colour with the incredible Kath Raisch at Company 3 this month.

The scripted film explores male relationships in blue collar work. Framed as a documentary, it was generously brought to me by Joel as an opportunity to further explore my rural landscape work as a structural backbone to gently lay the narrative on top of.
COMMERCIAL WORK
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
My production house, Fieldwork, is producing a series of commercials for our very important provincial teacher's union and we're going to camera at the end of the month.
The work I did on Favourite is helping to inform how we can give the image a feeling of honesty, so folks watching connect with the dire message teachers need the public to hear.
PERSONAL PRACTISE
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
All this while I'm off on paternity leave with a fresh baby at home!
If you're interested in seeing what it feels like, I publish a weekly Zine that explores the feelings around my family, my work and an honest effort to capture the landscapes it all takes place in.
If you're at SXSW and are interested in saying hi, please shoot me an email, I'd love to chat.

A period of my life looked an awful lot like this.
That period is over but something else is happening now too and maybe someday it will be compressed to two minutes as well.
